If you like the Wine Spectator suggestion, here are the spring semester courses to consider.
All classes are on Saturdays from 1 to 3 pm in San Francisco.
Feb. 3, 10 & 24—Wine Fundamentals— Examine and taste 60 wines that illustrate the basics of viticulture and winemaking. San Francisco State University, College of Extended Learning, phone (415) 405-7777. $90
Mar. 3 & 10—Wine Fundamentals— Examine and taste 40 wines to learn the five categories of wines, the major wine grapes of the world, etc. City College of San Francisco, Ft. Mason Campus, phone (415) 561-1840. $50
Mar 24 & 31—Taste The Terms— Jammy, legs, balance. Examine and taste 40 wines that illustrate most of the terms the experts use. City College of San Francisco, Fort Mason Campus, phone (415) 561-1840. $50
April 21 & 28—Older vs. Recent Vintages - Discuss and taste 20 pairs of wines that illustrate how different types of wines change as they age. Also at Ft. Mason, (415) 561-1840. $50
May 5, 12 & 19—Imports vs. California Counterparts - Examine and taste 30 pairs of wines that illustrate how California wines compare with their counterparts from Burgundy, New Zealand, Bordeaux, South Africa, Tasmania, etc. San Francisco State University, College of Extended Learning, phone (415)405-7777. $90
