1999 Campanile Pinot Grigio, Friuli, Italy
Friuli?—Tuscany or Piedmont does not lead in the export of premium Italian wines. No, the northeastern part of the country is the leader, and Friuli is a major player in the area. Pinot Grigio seemed to be its most trendy wine in '99.
Flavors of the Wine—Aaron hedged his oxygen bet by also fermenting half of the juice with the more conventional low-temperature method, which always brings out the more delicate flavors.
The Mineral Watch—Another important factor is that all the grapes came from a high-mineral environment. I think you'll tell from the taste.

Friuli is the the farthest northeastern wine district of Italy, with Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east. Hence, if you enjoyed this wine from Fruili, you are in good company. Friuli wines have been praised by emperors, princes, and Popes!
