Viewing Tips

These documents appear best when browsed with popular browsers like Netscape 4.7 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0. If you use older versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer (like 1.0 or 2.0), or other browsers, type, graphics and the general layout may appear different or difficult to read. We also recommend making your browser's window as W I D E as possible to improve the appearance. If you have a monitor screen smaller than 15 inches, you may have to scroll to the right to see additional columns or other information, though we design pages so that the most important information on any page appears first on most screens.

We carry a lot of articles and plenty of graphics every issue. If you are connecting via a slow modem, please be patient. If you are using Netscape or a browser with similar capability, you should be able to read the text while the graphics load. Sometimes our advertisers may insert an ad on a page which may delay loading a few extra seconds.

If you are new to the Web, another strategy for slow modems is to set your browser's preferences to not load images automatically. That way you can decide to load the images manually if you wish. In Netscape you can also use the reload menu choice to clean up any pictures or text that may be lost during transmission over phone lines. In Internet Explorer, use the refresh command. Also, in the Preferences menu on most browsers is a Clear Cache option. If you are seeing an older article when you expect to see a newer one, clearing the cache may solve the problem. Note that each different browser may use a different phrase that has the same meaning, such as Purge Cache instead of Clear Cache.

Bookmarking a dated page On may prevent you from returning to the update to that page. Most browsers display the current URL (or address) unless you specifically turn off that feature. Check to make sure the URL you are bookmarking does not have a date in it. If it does, you will return to that specific page, even after our pages have been updated. The best page to bookmark is the index page which includes the current Table of Contents, an archive link for older content plus links to all the other areas of our site. If you see our older address appearing in your browser, you probably came in through an older link. Please use the address and bookmark that.

If you are using America Online's built-in browsers, be sure to upgrade to at least version 4.0 for Windows or Macintosh. Version 4.0 uses Internet Explorer 4.0 and offers faster access and more features. America Online version 5.0, with even more features and speed, is also now available. Use keyword: UPGRADE on AOL to get the free update.

Though we try to optimize these pages for all platforms, some computers and browser versions may display empty space or uneven spacing on pages using invisible tables for layout.
