In 1994 a Canadian homemaker, Lorraine Lee, was making an Armenian orange cake when she became intensely frustrated with her zester. Lee found a solution in a line of woodworking tools carried by her husband's hardware store. Lee brought in a wood rasp, pulled its razor-sharp teeth across the orange's peel and was amazed at the results. A shower of pithless zest rested on the top of her cake. Lee alerted her husband to the results, and the couple promptly changed the description of the item in the company catalogue.

From there, a plethora of free press bombarded the tool, resulting in Microplane being informally named by several culinary experts the kitchen advance of the new century. Microplane now carries six series of zesters, graters and shavers with eight different blades, in addition to woodworking and home improvements rasps, trimming tools, Surform replacement blades, rotary shapers and hacksaw blades.
