Sally's Place

Review by Debbie Mazo

If you plan to fly the friendly skies in the near future, why not try a culinary adventure that's sure to wake up your tastebuds to all kinds of new flavors. Consider a stroll through the streets of Parma, the capital of Italy's famous food valley where Prosciutto di Parma ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese can be found on every menu. Sit down for a bowl of noodles at one of Bangkok's famous noodle stalls and sample a staple of Thailand city life. Or, fly nonstop to Morocco and join in a diffa, a feast that lasts for hours where guests savor numerous courses from mysteriously spiced salads to tagines (exotic stews) to couscous, Morocco's national dish.

At Sally's Place, Sally Bernstein, a food industry professional living in San Francisco, has brought together a group of food specialists to produce a guide with national and international information about cooking, dining, and traveling. Sally, and her team of writers and editors, feature stories daily on food, beverages, restaurant, and travel. To keep up to date on the latest trends, Sally's Place offers regular celebrity online radio interviews with wine and food excerpts. You'll need RealAudio software to listen to the interviews, however, online text excerpts are also available.

With a town-square look and feel, Sally's Place includes a searchable archive with extensive information on the finer things in life. The site features food news and interviews, recipes for ethnic cuisine, a national guide to farmers markets, a guide to preparing seafood, and restaurant, cookbook, and software reviews. There are also extensive essays about food, beer, wine, and coffee from around the world.

At Sally's Place, you can also find complete travel information on San Francisco and Paris, and shorter essays about several other destinations. Accompanying most food and travel recommendations is a concise review, and in some cases, an in-depth essay providing background history and analysis. Finally, if you're flight is delayed, you can always print out one of Sally's crossword puzzles, and test your food vocabulary for your favorite international destination.
