What educational programming is to television, this site is to the Internet. Loaded with information about wines and winemaking, Behind the Vine currently focuses on the Burgundy region of France. Created by an importer and distributor of fine wines in New York, this site takes you on a tour of seven premier Burgundy vineyards. You'll start with the village of Vosne-Romanee with its famed Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (noted for its premier cru and grand cru appellations), and continue south with stops at six more notable vineyards. Rating systems, unique production methods, age-old cultivation techniques, estates' histories and individual winemaking philosophies are examined. A caveat is offered at the beginning of your tour with regard to the frustration of downloading graphics and urges use of the browser's "reload" feature. It's worth the wait, as the graphics greatly enhance the tour.

Don't know a cask from a cuvee? Never fear, a glossary page is offered to further your understanding and enjoyment of the site. Even better, the link to the "Tips and Pips" page offers a lesson in wine label-reading along with phonetic spellings of the wines and vineyards featured. When all is said and done and you find yourself pining for a glass of Volnay, but unable to afford a trip to France, click "Where to Purchase Wines from Burgundy" (if you live in the New York area) or head to your local wine shop for a more moderately priced "taste" of France. Then sit back, savor and enjoy the links provided to vineyards right here in the States.
