JCN Hanukkah Page

Review by Debbie Mazo

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight days starting on the 15th day of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar (usually in November or December) to commemorate the victory of the Jews over the Hellenist Syrians in 165 BCE. In recognition of the holiday, Jews around the world light the menorah, or Hanukkah lamp, to honor the rededication of the ancient temple in Jerusalem when the last remaining container of pure oil miraculously lasted for eight nights. To help prepare you for the Festival of Lights, point your browser to the JCN Hanukkah Page.

Part of the Jewish Community Network, this how-to-guide to the Festival of Lights is sure to please every Hanukkah enthusiast. From how to light the menorah (when to light and where to light) to some great recipe ideas for Hanukkah meal preparations, the JCN Hanukkah Page includes everything you need to get a head start on celebrating the customs of this joyous holiday.

Without a doubt, the highlight of any Hanukkah meal is the latke. These delicious pancakes, made of grated potatoes and onions and fried crisp in oil, are a holiday favorite for all ages. Click on the International House of Latkes and you'll find a link to some time-tested recipes for this Hanukkah classic. If you have any Hanukkah recipes to share, send them in and they'll be posted in this recipe swap.

Before setting your Hanukkah table, check out the Easy Hanukkah Recipes for some healthy holiday sections. Vegetarians will enjoy the easy-to-make Vegetable Soup with Tofu which is practically a stew (if you don't like tofu, the soup is still tasty without it). Dessert fans can experiment with the Lemon Cut-Out Cookies, using dough which has been made ahead of time and chilled.

To top off your visit, take a virtual spin with the Great Computerized Dreidel Game. At the JCN's Hanukkah Page, there's more than enough to get you into the holiday spirit!
