But there's something unusual about the opening quotation from the New York Times. It appeared over twenty years ago. Clearly, Simi was way ahead of the curve. My panel just tasted the 1996, Simi's 25th successive vintage. By now, Simi is a master of imparting bright strawberry flavors from a brief contact (about two hours) with the skins after the crush. It is one of the few pinks my tasters gave a Highly Recommended rating.
Postscript: When the Simi brothers founded their winery in 1876, they didn't call it Simi, but named it after their birthplace in Tuscany. However, pronunciation difficulties forced them to change it. You see, they were born in the town of Montepulciano!
