Tarapaca Sauvignon Blanc

Below $15...

Is South America Overtaking California?

In this Annex two years ago we wrote that South America's low costs and fine growing conditions were attracting the investment and talent needed to raise wine quality rapidly. To see how their recent releases (all under $15) are doing, we matched 10 of them(from five different wineries) against California bottles of the same price. Here are the winners. The wine winning by the greatest number of votes is listed last.

Winner   Price Year Wine
So. Amer. Cal. Winning Margin
  x 1 $10 '97 Cabernet Sauvignon, Callaway, California
x   2 $7 '98 Chardonnay, Coastal Cellars, (Bargetto) Argentina
x   4 $14 '97 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Etchart Cafayate, Argentina
x   5 $13 '99 Chardonnay, Etchart Cafayate, Argentina
x   6 $7 '99 Chardonnay, Etchart, Rio de Plata, Argentina
x   7 $12 '99 Sauvignon Blanc, Tarapaca, (Beringer), Chile (pictured)
x   12 $9 '99 Torrontes, Etchart Cafayate, Argentina
  x 15 $10 '97 Zinfandel, Coastal, Beaulieu, California
x   16 $7 '99 Malbec, Etchart, Rio de Plata, Argentina
  x 23 $10 '97 Merlot, Farallon (Sebastiani) North Coast

WOW! South America won SEVEN out of ten. We're going to do another ten pair soon.
