Perfect Wines
for Your Holiday Feast

by Fred McMillin

Wine Gift

No matter how good the wine, usually at least 15% of my class doesn't like it: too intense, too much oak, etc. We rarely find a wine that is liked by EVERYONE—which is a perfect wine for a party, since very likely ALL of your guests will appreciate it.

Here are some bottles we think your guests might like.

White

  • Chardonnay, Dry Creek Vineyards, Russian River Valley, 2007, $20
  • Pinot Gris, Kenwood Vineyards, Sonoma County, 2008, $15
  • Riesling, Firestone Vineyards, Central Coast, 2007, $15
  • Vouvray (Chenin Blanc), George Meurgey (Boisset), France/ Loire, 2007, $8

Red

  • Cabernet Franc, Jarvis Wines, Napa Valley, 2004, $70
  • Cabernet Sauvignon, Corison Winery, Napa Valley, 2005, $70
  • Carignane ReZerve, Sobon Estate, Shenandoah Valley of California, 2003, $24
  • Lake William Blend, Jarvis Wines, Napa Valley, 2004, $75
  • Le Cigare Volant, Bonny Doon Vineyards, California, 2004, $30
  • Petite Sirah, Parducci True Grit, Mendocino, 2005, $30
  • Pinot Noir, Pedroncelli Vineyards, Russian River Valley, 2008, $18
  • Primitivo, Deaver Vineyards, Amador County, 2007, $22
  • Statuesque, Sculpterra Vineyards, Paso Robles, 2006, $35
  • Syrah, Cakebread Cellars, Paso Robles, 2007, $50
  • Zinfandel, Pedroncelli Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley, 2007, $28

Dessert

  • Petite Sirah Port, Bogle Vineyards, California, 2006, $18/500ml
  • Petite Sirah Port, Deaver Vineyards, Amador County,NV, $25
  • Zinfandel Port, Deaver Vineyards, Sierra Foothills, NV, $26

Postscript

Some of the above beauties are pretty pricey. If they are too hard on the budget, here are some unanimously approved that cost less, though they didn't rate as high as the first team.

White

  • Chardonnay, Dry Creek Vineyards, Russian River Valley, 2007, $20
  • Pinot Gris, Kenwood Vineyards, Sonoma County, 2008, $15
  • Riesling, Firestone Vineyards, Central Coast, 2007, $15
  • Vouvray (Chenin Blanc), George Meurgey (Boisset), France/ Loire, 2007, $8

Red

  • Cabernet Franc, Writer's Block (Steele), Lake County, 2004, $18

And a Final Wine Smile

Harvest Humor

While blessing the freshly-picked grapes, the man of the cloth was asked also to appeal for no rain. He replied, "Sorry, I'm in SALES, not OPERATIONS."
