We're half way through the year, and here are the BEST BUYS and BEST WINES my tasters have swirled, sniffed and sipped so far.

WHITE WINE

Best Buy - $6 Chardonnay, Sutter Home, 2000
Best Wine - $42 Chardonnay, Jarvis, 1999 Napa Valley, Rating—91
 

RED WINE

Best Buy - $7 Merlot, Glen Ellen, 1999
Best Wine - $120 Cabernet Sauvignon, Joseph Phelps, 1997, Backus Vineyard, Napa Valley, Rating—97
 

SPARKLER

Best Buy - $8 Barefoot Bubbly, Non-Vintage
Best Wine - $35 Chandon Etoile, Non-Vintage, Rating—91
 

DESSERT

Best Buy - $14 Elysium (Black Muscat), Quady, 2000
Best Wine - $65 (375 ml.) Riesling Ice Wine, 1999, Inniskillin, Canada, Rating—97
 

BEST WINERY

Makes the Best Buys - McPherson Wines, Australia, joint venture with USA's Brown-Forman
