Memorial Day: Food in Hand

I always associate Memorial Day, more so than Labor Day, as a festivity ripe for handheld and portable food: sandwiches, picnic fare, burgers and grilled thingies. The spring-like weather rejuvenates, encouraging romping outdoors and simple food plans. Labor Day brings an end to summer, but it's usually hotter, with more substantial grilling feasts and a sense of finality: lazy days are gone, tomorrow it's back to school and crockpots.

So here's a collection of what I consider fine Memorial Day fare. Nothing too elaborate or contrived. Just tasty, satisfying, simple dishes to enjoy while you dream of summer days ahead.
