Did You Know

Time is running out! The Vegetarian Resource Group is sponsoring its annual essay contest for students ages 18 and under, with submissions due by May 1, 1998. First prize in each category is a $50 savings bond.

Entrants should write a 2-3 page essay on any aspect of vegetarianism. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish or poultry. Among the many reasons for being a vegetarian are beliefs about ethics, culture, health, aesthetics, religion, world peace, economics, world hunger, and the environment.

Contest categories are: ages 8 and under, 9-13, and 14-18. Entrants should base their compositions on interviews, research, and/or personal opinion. Being a vegetarian is not a requirement for entrance into this contest. All essays become property of The Vegetarian Resource Group. Submissions should be postmarked by May 1, 1998.

Send entries to The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203. Include your name, age, address, telephone number, grade, school, and teacher's name.

The Vegetarian Resource Group is a non-profit organization that educates the public about vegetarianism. Membership includes a subscription to the 36-page bimonthly Vegetarian Journal ($20 per year), which contains recipes, food hints, nutrition articles, and more.

To receive information about the essay contest and a lesson plan on vegetarianism, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203. For a pamphlet on Vegetarian Nutrition for Teenagers, send a separate self-addressed stamped envelope.

Leprechaun Cake and Other Tales, a children's book with colorful stories and simple, creative recipes, is on sale through the VRG for $10, including shipping and handling. The fun-filled 44-page I Love Animals and Broccoli activity book is also available to order for $5.00. Prepaid orders may be sent to the Vegetarian Resource Group's above address. Further information about The Vegetarian Resource Group and vegetarianism in general is available on their web site www.vrg.org.
